The Spa & Wellness exhibition, organised for the ninth time at the Hungexpo Budapest Fair Centre, will display a wide range of Hungarian health tourism offers – thermal and wellness hotels, aquaparks, amusement spas and baths - from 12-14 November.

On the first day, a special trade day will be organised by the Hungarian National Tourist Office, and the HNTO has also launched a special competition for tickets to the fair.
The conference on the first day will give a detailed insight into the possibilities and developments of Hungarian health tourism, with speakers representing the state administration and private enterprises. The afternoon section will give practical advice on how to develop health products from natural resources.
Besides trade professionals, the HNTO also awaits the general public with tourism brochures and information and quizzes on spas.

Pápa hotel development – based on NATO

Bookmark and Share  Print article  Send link
At an investment cost of HUF 3.7 billion (14 million euros), a new 4-star hotel will be built in Pápa (north Transdanubia), next to the thermal baths.

The hotel, which has also received EU funding, will open in spring 2012, with 133 rooms, including six presidential suites, 25 superior rooms, a conference room for 250 and a restaurant for 200 persons. The hotel will be linked to the thermal baths, where developments have just started.
The hotel fills a gap in the hotel capacity of the city: since the opening of the thermal baths in 2002, the number of guest nights has grown by 600% although there is no hotel capable of hosting conferences and wellness guests. Demand increased still further last year with the opening of the NATO airbase.

New tenders being reviewed

Bookmark and Share  Print article  Send link
Discussions about the tenders of the New Széchenyi Plan’s Healing Hungary chapter are on the way, while the aims and the budgets have yet to be decided, said Mr Endre Horváth, state secretary responsible for tourism.

He was speaking at a trade consultation last week.
Participants of the conference, which focussed on the health industry, could gain an insight into the new strategy and comments of the trade concerning the preliminary documents. Participants also had the chance to air their opinions about the programme, to be launched on 15 January. The “Healing Hungary – Health Industry” is the first chapter (with 12 sub-programmes) of the New Széchenyi Plan, defining the break-points of Hungary.
This time, instead of infrastructural developments, the focus will be put on the better exploitation of thermal resources and geothermic opportunities. The planned tenders are designed to promote a health-conscious attitude to lifestyle by supporting active tourism. Spiritual health will also be highlighted along with a healthy diet.

Healing Hungary as new country image?

Bookmark and Share  Print article  Send link
The central message of the country for the forthcoming years will be “healing Hungary”, announced Mr Balázs Botos, deputy state secretary of the Ministry for National Economy. Hungary has all the potential to render health tourism as a breakthrough point, he added.

In the next few years, the Hungarian message will focus on physical and mental health, but “with the help of gastronomy, the quality of life and tourism services will also improve”. To achieve this, more support should be given to the catering industry, the politician added. In order to improve the possibilities, the demand and the offer should be more balanced. Problems include the lack of restaurants offering traditional gastronomy values, fresh Hungarian ingredients are often missing from the menu and the education system is also out of date.

Hungarian Baywatch-girl wanted

Bookmark and Share  Print article  Send link
Inspired by the famous Australian advertisement (www.islandreefjob.com), the spa of Sárvár has launched a campaign looking for a new, sexy swim-guard, to be the Hungarian Baywatch-girl.

The lucky winner of the job ad can earn HUF 250,000 (cca. 1000 euros). She must be a good swimmer, smart, polite and clever, but her priority qualification is full know-how concerning the spa’s recent renovation.
Women between the ages of 16-99 can apply for the dream-job; the only criterion is “natural beauty” i.e. skinny, anorexic-type applicants will be rejected.
The winner will be chosen at a special beauty pageant on 19 August. Last year, the job attracted more than 100 applicants and organisers expect the same number this year.
